Job description

At Land Life, our ambition is not just to create positive change, but to inspire it. We're on a mission to restore our planet's 2 billion acres of degraded land, by planting the right trees, at the right time, and in the right place; leveraging technology every step of the way; and unlocking carbon and other new markets to fund this work. Our team is global, our impact is significant, and now we're looking for a Forest Data Imputation intern to join us. This is an opportunity to make a direct, positive impact for local communities, biodiversity and to use nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt our planet to climate change.

Together, we create impact you can see.

THIS IS US

Land Life is an international scale-up with over 10 years of experience in nature restoration. Last year we planted 3.5 million trees worldwide and were recognised as an UpLink Top Innovator at the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos. Read more about Land Life and our principles.

THE ROLE

One of the key aspects that differentiate Land Life from others in the industry is our innovative approach to utilising advanced technology and ecological modelling. We analyse large datasets from local and national governments, known as National Forest Inventories (NFI), to predict forest growth, which informs reforestation feasibility. By integrating additional environmental data, we can refine our predictions and enhance the effectiveness of our reforestation efforts.

In this internship of three months, you will play a crucial role in supporting this process. You’ll be working in the Science team, which includes biologists, foresters, and ecologists, to identify and analyse large datasets. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Searching for relevant NFI and environmental data sources for our main geographies (including Spain, Colorado, Australia) or potential new regions.

  • Investigating the structure and relevance of the data, including identifying usable values, and assessing data quality for analysis.

  • Processing and cleaning the data using R (preferred) or Python to prepare it for further analysis.

  • Conducting data analyses to extract key insights that contribute to forest growth predictions and reforestation strategies.

  • Assisting in writing reports summarizing findings from your analyses

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Work in a highly engaged, rapidly growing international nature-restoration company towards impact you can see;

  • Monthly allowance of EUR525 per month (based on full-time);

  • Office in a beautiful location in Amsterdam, next to Oosterpark;

  • Daily free lunch at the office & weekly company workouts;

  • Hybrid and flexible working;  (at least 3 days in the office preferred)

Job requirements

THIS IS YOU:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in Forestry, Ecology, Biology, Biostatistics, or a related field in the Netherlands.

  • Proficient in programming and data analysis in R (preferred to Python).

  • Comfortable working with complex datasets and with a problem-solving mindset.

  • Able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, and be at the office in Amsterdam at least 2-3 days per week.

  • Basic knowledge of QGIS is a plus.

  • Strong written and spoken English skills.
